The largest high-yield corporate bond sale on record found plenty of buyers. The money arrived. It did not arrive cheaply.

IN 30 SECONDS

SoftBank sold $11.1 billion of dollar- and euro-denominated bonds to help finance its expanding AI portfolio. LSEG data cited by Reuters ranks it as the largest high-yield corporate bond sale on record. The highest-paying dollar tranche carries a 9.75% annual rate.

AI still attracts billions. The cost of those billions is getting harder to ignore.

SoftBank has committed $64.6 billion to OpenAI and is expected to own roughly 13% of the company. It is also buying ABB’s robotics business for $5.4 billion and DigitalBridge for $3.1 billion.

That makes this bond sale more than a financing headline. It is a market-priced test of how much risk investors will accept to fund one of the world’s most concentrated AI strategies.

THE NUMBER THAT MATTERS

9.75%

The annual rate on SoftBank’s 7½-year dollar notes. Other tranches ranged from 7.125% to 9.25%.

The size is historic. The comparison is sharper.

SoftBank’s 2021 bond sale paid between 2.125% and 5.25%. This time, the range starts above 7%.

That does not prove the AI strategy will fail. It raises the return the strategy must generate. Expensive debt leaves less room for delayed IPOs, weaker valuations or slower cash generation.

MNS LENS

The AI boom is entering its financing phase. Enthusiasm funded the first chapter. Infrastructure absorbed the second. Now creditors are putting a visible price on concentration, timing and execution.

What does this change?

For operators, AI projects need a credible path to productivity or revenue. For investors, the size of AI spending matters less without understanding who carries the debt, what it costs and when the cash must arrive.

CreditSights estimated that Arm and OpenAI now represent three-quarters of SoftBank’s asset value at current levels. That is an analyst calculation, not a promise about future valuations.

WHAT TO WATCH NEXT

SoftBank’s credit-default-swap spread; the timing of potential OpenAI and SB Energy listings; Arm’s market value; and whether high-yield debt becomes a broader funding channel for the AI buildout.
